Through EU funded Regional Programme on Local Democracy 12 municipalities across Albania commit to partner with civil society to address citizens’ priority needs.Nov 2, 2017
12 municipalities in Albania, namely: Dibra, Durrës, Elbasan, Korça, Lezha, Librazhd, Përmet, Prrenjas, Roskovec, Shkodra, Tirana and Tropoja, are selected as partners for implementation of the Regional Programme for Local Democracy in Western Balkans (ReLOaD). The partnership consists of a grant scheme of 1,130,952 Euro to be granted to civil society organizations (CSO) operating in the 12 selected municipalities.
Another key component of the intervention is a capacity building programme targeting local authorities and civil society. Around 100 civil society organizations will benefit from the grant scheme to implement projects addressing priorities outlined in local development strategies which aim to improve quality of life for citizens living in those municipalities and encourage voice and accountability. All interventions aim to promote local democracy and participation of citizens ion decision making that affect their lives.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between UNDP as implementing agency and each partner municipality.
Ambassador Romana Vlahutin, Head of Delegation of European Union to Albania underlined:
” With this initiative, the EU and the UNDP have developed an ambitious initiative to strengthen the cooperation between local governments and civil society organizations in the Western Balkans. This will have a real impact on peoples' lives, with civil society organizations working together with municipalities in providing better, more targeted and inclusive services to citizens."
Mr. Brian J. Williams, United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Albania said: “RELOAD is a new opportunity to get municipalities closer to civil society, communities and citizens of Albania that are looking forward to more ways to interact with all local actors for a more vibrant society and local democracy”.
ReLOaD will improve funding mechanisms through which municipalities fund CSOs and implement local development priorities in collaboration with CSOs. In that way, ReLOaD will increase the involvement of civil society in decision-making and improve service provision to better serve local needs in partnership with local governments across the Western Balkans.
