Report violence!

A spectacular gathering of girls and boys, women and men from all walks of life, witnessed the launch of a campaign which aims to put an end to violence against women and girls. Called ”I choose to live without violence”, the campaign will run nationally and include over 100 orange events starting from parades to street theaters, school debates, artistic performances, lectures with university students.

Well known Albanian journalists, civil society activists, women victims of violence, took the stage to add their voices to this solidarity movement to end violence against women and and appeal to the Albanian women and men  to commit to a society where men and women have equal opportunities. An appeal was made to the Albanian society: Report Domestic Violence whenever and wherever it happens.

Addressing participants at the launch event, the UNDP Country Director Limya Eltayeb highlighted:” We are all responsible to act against this horrible violation of human rights, not tomorrow, not next year, not someday, but NOW! Holding institutions accountable but more importantly challenging patriarchy and all of those myths that keep it alive, raising our boys to be respectful and peaceful, empowering our girls to reach for the sky. My work in the United Nations has taught me that every single individual’s efforts count. It is time to act now! The motto of the campaign is: I choose to live without violence. If you are a victim of gender based and domestic violence seek assistance and put an end to violence in your life”.

Gender based violence and domestic violence is a challenge for the Albanian society according to the official statistics. More than half of Albanian women (aged 15-49) have experienced at least one form of domestic violence in their lifetime. Addressing this appalling situation at the launch event, Minister of Social Welfare and Youth Blendi Klosi presented the newly approved National Strategy on Gender Equality and its Plan of Action (2016-2020) as a roadmap towards a society of equal opportunities and free of violence.

The Campaign will be implemented the Ministry of Social Welfare and Youth in partnership with by UNDP, UN Women and UNFPA with the financial support of the Government of Sweden.

The launch of  the campaign“I Chose to Live without Violence” kicked of “16 days of Activism” in Albania which runs every 25th of November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women with a series of activities and events calling for the elimination of violence against women and girls.
