150 students in Tirana joined the Social Good Summit

Connecting Today. Creating tomorrow was  the theme of the Social Good Summit held today in Albania. The event brought together around 170 students from the Information Technology Vocational School in Tirana to talk about the role of technology and social media as powerful forces for change and for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Minister of Social Welfare and Youth Blendi Klosi present at the event  highlighted the relevance of digital skills in gaining successful employment.

Brian Williams, UN Resident Coordinator in Albania in his speech underlined:” The Social Good Summit (SGS) began its journey seven years ago. This platform has an immense power  as it brings together a community of students to share experiences, knowledge  and come up with ideas how to make Albania a better place, how to use the power of technology and new media to advance development  and reach the Sustainable Development Goals. Thanks to technology and digital communications, the conversations that is happening here will go beyond the borders of Albania. So technology connects people to each other but also builds awareness and spreads information which plays an instrumental role to mobilize action for global change. The Sustainable Development Goals Agenda guides our work at UNDP. Through our programmes we are address a number of goals such create jobs, reduce poverty, empower women, recover  from disasters, protect the environment”.

Three panellists discussed with students about digital presence, internet marketing techniques, and benefits of using open source technologies in Albania and the role of technology and social media as drivers for social change. Students were introduced to real life examples of several initiatives undertaken in Albania.

Each September, world leaders come together at the United Nations General Assembly to discuss global issues and ways in which to tackle them. Recognizing that the voices and ideas of concerned citizens connected by social media and technology can be powerful forces for change, the United Nations Development Programme and its partner are hosting the Social Good Summit with the aim of empowering people everywhere to have their voices heard, both during and after UN Week.

Last year world leaders adopted the  2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which  includes seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets, or specific benchmarks, to be met by 2030. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

These 17 Goals build on the successes of the Millennium Development Goals, while including new areas such as climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption, peace and justice, among other priorities. The goals are interconnected – often the key to success on one will involve tackling issues more commonly associated with another.
United Nations Development Programmed is working in partnership with the Government of Albania to achieve the goals by 2030.  UNDP’s  interventions in the areas of human rights and social inclusion, democratic governance and the environment, contribute to the achievement of the SDGs. UNDP is also providing support to the Government of Albania  to integrate the SDGs into their national development plans.
