Roma NGOs at the training

Today, Ilir feels he is powered with knowledge about how his organization should be run. He is the Executive Director of “Roma Education Association”, a civil society organization operating for few years in the regions of Pogradec and Korca. His association counts around 50 members.

“This was one of the most useful training programmes I have ever participated.  I realized there are many things we need to improve in the way how we manage our organization. Now I know how to run it.”

Ilir and 24 other Roma Community members, such as representatives of civil society organizations, volunteers, participated at a two day training programme dedicated to ” Organizational Management for Roma and Egyptian NGOs in Albania.”

The topics delivered at the training were quite unknown for the participants, although some of them have been running civil society organizations for several years.A needs assessment survey was carried out ahead of the training so as to tailor the training sessions based on existing needs. Topics delivered included: NGO management, process management and human resources management.

Luljeta Kazanxhi is another participant at the training. She is the Executive Director of “Roma Women Center for Development” operating in the region of Vlora and Fier.  The focus of the organization is work with women and children.

”This was a very useful training because it provided us with key information, tools, techniques, and good practices for NGO management.  The first thing I will do when I go back is not only share the knowledge I gained with my colleagues, but I will right away start restructuring the organization based on what we learned. Now I understand we were not functioning properly.

The training sessions aimed to strengthen the organizational structures, in order to achieve better results for the community, as well as create successful models of Roma and Egyptian NGOs

Liliana Cungu-one of the trainers says:”There is great potential in the younger generation, and more focus should be placed in their training and capacity development. We are convinced they will succeed”

The training was organized by UNDP Albania in the framework of “Supporting Social Inclusion of Roma and Egyptian Communities” programme which aims at social, economic and political empowerment of Roma and Egyptian communities. The Project is funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Albania, in partnership with the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities. The project started in July 2012 and will end in December 2014.

Implemented in the regions of Berat, Korca and Vlora, the project interventions include community mobilization and infrastructure development; capacity building for civil society organizations through training and small grants; and, support to Roma and Egyptian job-seekers and entrepreneurs.
